Irvine Cuts Off San Clemente at the Pass to Take 14-7 Victory

Irvine High School defeated San Clemente, 14-7, in a South Coast League game Friday night.

San Clemente (3-4 overall, 1-1 in league play) took the early lead on an eight-yard dash by running back Juan Maldonado with 4:46 left in the first period. Maldonado rushed for 82 yards in 19 carries.

Irvine (3-4, 1-1) tied the score on a 27-yard pass from quarterback Deron McCoy to tight end Joey Osso with 8:10 remaining in the third quarter.

Irvine took the lead on a 33-yard run by Shad Vickers, who scored with 4:03 left in the fourth period. Vickers ran for 144 yards in 17 carries.

The game was characterized by key penalties, as the teams combined for 105 yards in penalties.

McCoy completed seven of nine passes for 81 yards and was intercepted once.

San Clemente’s starting quarterback, Mario Watkins, passed for only 11 yards and was intercepted once. He was replaced in the fourth quarter by Ken Dolan, who passed for only 27 yards and was intercepted three times.
