A man and woman were killed and three other other people were injured early Saturday in a head-on crash along the rain-slickened South Bay Freeway in National City, police said.
Five vehicles were involved in the accident, which authorities said occurred at 10:12 a.m., just west of Reo Drive.
The identities of the dead and injured were not available.
All three injured were treated in area hospitals and released, hospital officials said.
The two people who were killed were driving in a car that was heading eastbound along the heavily trafficked freeway, a major east-west route in southern San Diego County.
The car was hit behind by a pickup truck, forcing it into the westbound lanes, where it collided head-on with a truck, authorities said.
The man was dead at the scene; the woman was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital at 12:35 p.m.
The three injured, a man and two minors, were in the truck that collided head-on with the car, authorities said.
