SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : Cal Poly SLO Rallies but Loses to Sacramento

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, trailing 16-6 going into the fourth quarter, failed on a two-point conversion try with 2:37 left as Cal State Sacramento held on for a 16-15 victory Saturday in a Western Football Conference game at Sacramento.

Ramin Massoudi kicked three field goals, and Ed Bueno scored on a nine-yard run as the Hornets, 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference, built their lead.

But Cal Poly (3-4 and 0-2) came back as Joe Fragaidakis, who scored on a 28-yard run in the second quarter, had a 16-yard touchdown run in the fourth to make the score 16-15. But Keith Jarrett’s pass intended for Claude Joseph was batted down by Sacramento’s Rod Patton.

Cal Poly had one more chance, but Jarrett’s third-down pass from midfield was intercepted by Tim Brown with five seconds left.

San Diego 38, La Verne 17--Dave Bergmann set a single-season school record by kicking his 12th field goal as the Toreros won easily at San Diego.

Bergmann broke the previous record of 11 set by Robert Lozzi in both 1981 and ’82.

San Diego improved to 6-1, its best start since 1981; La Verne fell to 1-5.

UC Davis 24, CS Northridge 7--Jim Tomasin ran for two touchdowns and quarterback Jeff Bridewell threw for one to lift the Aggies to the win at Davis.

Tomasin scored on runs of one yard and nine yards, and Bridewell hit Craig Jones with a 26-yard touchdown pass. Bridewell completed 21 of 33 passes for 229 yards and one interception.

The Matadors’ only score came on a five-yard run by quarterback Sherdrick Bonner.

It was the Aggies’ eighth consecutive win over the Matadors. Six of those decisions have come by 17 points or more. Davis improved to 6-1.

The loss, CSUN’s second in a row, dropped the Matadors to 4-4 overall and all but out of the Division II playoff picture.

Occidental 44, Claremont-Mudd 14--David Grossklaus had three touchdown receptions to lead the Tigers to victory in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Claremont.

Occidental quarterback Tony Werbelow completed 11 of 13 passes for 205 yards, 117 yards going to Grossklaus. Occidental (5-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play) had 424 yards total offense and limited the Stags (2-4 and 1-2) to 252.

Azusa Pacific 31, Whittier 6--Senior linebacker Steve Piro had 5 1/2 of the Cougars’ 11 sacks, as they forced five Whittier turnovers in a nonconference win at Azusa.

The Cougars improved to 3-2; Whittier fell to 1-5.

UC Santa Barbara 30, CS Hayward 12--Steve Armstrong threw three touchdown passes and Todd Reynolds kicked three field goals as the Gauchos won their fourth consecutive game at Santa Barbara.

Armstrong threw two touchdown passes to Khaled Shahbo in a 27-point second quarter. Armstrong had 214 yards passing, 102 yards to Shahbo.

The Gauchos are 5-2; the Pioneers dropped to 0-6.

Santa Clara 38, Cal Lutheran 15--Five Santa Clara players scored touchdowns and Tobin Douglas added a 22-yard field goal in the win over the Kingsmen at Santa Clara.

Santa Clara (5-3) raced to a 24-7 halftime lead.
