An unidentified man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train as he lay across the tracks behind a Simi Valley bar, police said Monday.

The man, who carried no identification and whose body was too damaged to be identified, was killed about 9:45 p.m. Sunday behind the Regency Bar in the 1600 block of Los Angeles Avenue, Lt. Bob Klamser said.

No foul play was suspected, but police were unable to determine what the man was doing there, whether he had been drinking or if his death was a suicide, Klamser said.

The train was westbound to Santa Barbara when an engineer sighted the man on the tracks about 200 feet ahead. The train’s horn was sounded and the emergency brakes engaged but the man did not respond and the train hit him before it could stop, Klamser said. The train was moving at 70 m.p.h. and took half a mile to stop, he said.
