Governor Offers Reward in Slaying of Scout
Gov. George Deukmejian, responding to a request from Sheriff Sherman Block, is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the drive-by shooting death of Anthony Gardner, an Explorer Scout and a volunteer at the sheriff’s station in Carson.
Gardner, 19, was shot to death Sept. 18 in the 10200 block of South Haas Avenue in Los Angeles. Police are searching for two suspects who were riding in a late-model blue-gray sedan, according to the governor’s office.
A bill passed by the 1988 Legislature and signed by Deukmejian increased the reward that the governor can offer in murder and kidnaping cases from $10,000 to $50,000.
Block had requested that the governor offer the reward in the hope that it may help solve the case.
