Hazardous Waste ‘Roundup’ Planned

The City of Los Angeles will hold a household hazardous waste “roundup” Saturday at Dodger Stadium to collect chemicals and other items that could cause environmental damage if dumped in ordinary landfills.

The city’s Department of Public Works is sponsoring the event as part of a pilot program to gather data that will aid in designing a permanent hazardous household waste program for the city.

At six previous roundups in other areas of the city, about 20,000 gallons of paint, 19,000 gallons of motor oil and 900 batteries were gathered from about 10,400 households, according to department figures.

Hazardous items include car batteries, paint products, pesticides, herbicides, outdated medicines, motor oil, brake and transmission fluid, antifreeze, oven and toilet bowl cleaners, spot removers, silver and furniture polishes, window cleaners, chlorine bleach, mothballs, pool acids and any products labeled as corrosive, flammable, an irritant or poison.

The waste will be collected from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Dodger Stadium advance ticket booth parking lot, 1750 Stadium Way in Elysian Park. Waste generated by small businesses or industry will not be accepted, the department said.
