Matthew Faulkner has been named executive director...

Matthew Faulkner has been named executive director of the Alhambra Chamber of Commerce.

Faulkner, who assumed his post Oct. 16, had been vice president of business and economic development for the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce since 1985.

Alice V. Watkins, director of Student Services Center of Education at Cal State Los Angeles and former personnel commissioner for the city of West Covina, has been given the Distinguished Citizen Award for 1989 by the San Gabriel Valley branch of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People. Watkins is involved in the development of programs for teaching reading to the mentally retarded.

Jack Parker of Covina has been appointed to the county Delinquency and Crime Commission. Parker is former president of the Irwindale Chamber of Commerce.

Sophia Tang of Pasadena has been named by Allstate Insurance Co. as its top sales representative in Los Angeles County. Tang is a senior account agent in Allstate’s San Marino office.

Hugh O. La Bounty, president of Cal Poly Pomona, has been named chairman of the California State University’s Task Force on Environmental Compliance. The task force will assess the status of the system’s compliance with governmental regulations concerning health and occupational safety.

Gary A. Lorden, professor of mathematics at Caltech, has been appointed vice president for student affairs. In addition to teaching, Lorden previously served as dean of students.

Frances H. Arnold, assistant professor of chemical engineering, and Andrew G. Myers, assistant professor of chemistry at Caltech, will each receive $100,000 a year for five years as recipients of David and Lucile Packard Fellowships in Science and Engineering. The fellowships are for scientific equipment and supplies for young professors.

Leroy E. Hood, professor of biology at Caltech, has received the $10,000 Steven C. Beering Award for Advancement of Biomedical Science. The award is given by the Indiana University School of Medicine to a research scientist in recognition of outstanding achievement in biomedical science.
