A 26-year-old El Cajon man was killed and his passenger suffered a concussion in a spectacular North County car crash Saturday afternoon, California Highway Patrol officers said.

Charles William Hale Jr. was driving eastbound at 4:56 p.m. on California 78 at a “high rate of speed” when he missed a curve and the car went airborne 300 feet east of Old Pasqual Road, officers and coroner’s deputies said.

The car, a 1987 Nissan Sentra, flew for 100 feet down an embankment and overturned, throwing both Hale and passenger Edward Wright of San Diego from the car, officers said. Neither was wearing seat belts, officers said.

The car landed on top of Hale, killing him, officers said. Wright was in serious but stable condition Saturday night at Palomar Hospital, a nursing supervisor said.
