EAST ROUNDUP : No. 15 West Virginia, Harris Drive Past Boston College, 44-30

Major Harris led West Virginia’s 320-yard rushing attack with 98 yards as the 15th-ranked Mountaineers held off a Boston College comeback Saturday for a 44-30 victory at Newton, Mass.

Boston College (1-6) trailed 21-0 in the first quarter but rallied in the second half. The Eagles’ Willie Hicks threw for three touchdowns, including an 83-yard- er to Kenrick Skerritt on the last play of the third quarter that cut the deficit to 34-30.

But on the next series, Harris led the Mountaineers (6-1-1) on an 80-yard drive capped by Carl Hayes’ two-yard run, making the score 41-30 with 3:50 gone in the fourth period.

Syracuse 18, East Carolina 16--Redshirt freshman John Biskup, who had missed his fourth extra point try of the season earlier, kicked a 24-yard field goal with four seconds to play as the Orangemen rallied to win at Syracuse, N.Y.

Biskup kicked four field goals to help Syracuse (4-3) snap a two-game losing streak at home. East Carolina fell to 4-2-1.

Yale 23, Penn 22--Ed Perks kicked a 28-yard field goal with 10 seconds left to give the Bulldogs to the Ivy League victory at New Haven, Conn.

Perks kicked the game-winning field goal for Yale, 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Ivy League, after a 55-yard drive. Rich Friedenberg had put the Quakers ahead, 22-20, with a 30-yard field goal with 4:52 left.

Army 35, Rutgers 14--Tailback Mike Mayweather had his fourth consecutive 100-yard rushing game and his third consecutive three-touchdown game to lead the Cadets at West Point, N.Y.

Mayweather gained 138 yards in 28 carries and teammates Bryan McWilliams and Calvin Cass also rushed for more than 100 yards as Army (5-2) had 463 yards on the ground.

Northern Illinois 20, Temple 17--Quarterback Stacey Robinson scored two touchdowns and set a school single-season rushing record in leading the Huskies over the Owls at Philadelphia.

With the Huskies (6-2) trailing 17-14, Robinson scored from the eight with 5:57 left.

Robinson gained 87 yards in 21 carries to become Northern Illinois’ single-season rushing leader with 892 yards. Marshall Taylor set the former mark, 826 yards, in 1987.

James Madison 24, Navy 14--Halfback Mike Campbell scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, and a one-yard scoring run by fullback Willie Lanier rallied the Dukes at Annapolis, Md.

James Madison, a Division I-AA team, improved to 5-2-1; Navy dropped to 2-5.

Princeton 28, Harvard 14--At Cambridge, Mass., halfback Judd Garrett threw for one touchdown, caught a pass for another and ran for a third as the Tigers remained unbeaten in the Ivy League.

Garrett, who carried 24 times for 148 yards, surprised Harvard on Princeton’s first play from scrimmage, taking a pitch from quarterback Joel Sharp and passing to Scott Gibbs, who took the ball all alone at the Crimson 43-yard line and scored untouched.

Dartmouth 28, Cornell 14--Al Rosier ran for two touchdowns and Tom Parker caught two touchdown passes to lead the Big Green in an Ivy League game at Ithaca, N.Y.

Holy Cross 49, Brown 13--Holy Cross fullback Joe Segreti rushed for 120 yards in 26 carries and the Crusader defense scored two touchdowns at Worcester, Mass.

Bucknell 27, Columbia 12--Brian Henesey ran for two touchdowns at New York to snap the Bison’s three-game losing streak.
