Countywide : Environmental Unit Moves to New Offices

Share

The county’s Environmental Health Division, the watchdog agency that regulates the handling of toxic chemicals and substances as well as drinking water and wells, has moved its offices to a refurbished, 30,000-square-foot building at 2009 E. Edinger Ave. in Santa Ana.

The division, headed by director Robert E. Merryman, had operated out of a series of offices in the 1700 block of West 17th Street for more than 16 years. But the agency has grown to employ 190 and needed more space.

“It was a long effort and a lot of work to reach this milestone,” said Merryman, whose division is the enforcement arm of the county’s Health Care Agency for all environmental issues except air pollution.

Besides toxic waste and materials, the agency enforces community noise standards, supervises ground water cleanup programs, monitors infectious waste disposal and regulates beaches and other public water recreation areas.
