Long Beach : Final Vote on New Airport Noise Ordinance Postponed
The City Council has postponed a final vote on a controversial noise-control ordinance that would increase the number of flights permitted in and out of Long Beach Airport.
The council decided to put off a final vote for three weeks to give airport users and North Long Beach residents more time to comment on the proposal, which was drawn up under court order. Instead of restricting the number of flights, as has been the practice, the regulations would limit noise levels. Homeowners in the area complain that the extra flights will further disrupt their peace and quiet, while private pilots complain that the new law would unfairly interfere with their flights.
A federal judge ordered the city to revise its noise ordinances in response to a lawsuit filed by commercial airlines that use the airport, which is north of the 405 Freeway.
