SOUTHWEST ROUNDUP : Gill Leads Texas Tech Past No.22 Texas, 24-17

Jamie Gill threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Manyweather for the go-ahead score with 4 minutes 26 seconds remaining as Texas Tech upset No. 22 Texas, 24-17, for the Red Raiders’ first victory at Austin, Tex., since 1967.

With Tech trailing 17-14 and facing third and 26, Gill escaped a strong rush and found Manyweather in the clear along the sideline.

Lin Elliott kicked a 51-yard field goal with 1:20 to go, and a pass by Peter Gardere, Texas’ freshman quarterback, was intercepted by Brian Dubiski at the Tech 31-yard line with 22 seconds to go.

Texas fell to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the Southwest Conference. Tech improved to 6-2 and 3-2.

Houston 55, Texas Christian 10--Andre Ware passed for six touchdowns and safety Chris Ellison intercepted three passes as the 17th-ranked Cougars won at Ft. Worth, Tex.

Ware, the nation’s leader in total offense who also set a Southwest Conference single-season passing record, had touchdown pass plays of 62 yards to Emmanuel Hazard and 40 yards to Paul Smith as Houston took a 20-3 first-quarter lead.

Hazard broke his conference record of 16 receptions with 19, for 194 yards and three touchdowns. Hazard’s 17 touchdown receptions this season broke the previous conference record of 15 by Jason Phillips of Houston in 1988.

The Cougars are 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the Southwest Conference. TCU fell to 4-5 and 2-4.

Ware had touchdown pass plays of 29 yards to Patrick Cooper, 24 yards to Smith and 19 yards to Craig Alexander in the third quarter. Ware left at the start of the fourth after completing 42 of 63 passes for 477 yards.

Ware’s 3,413 yards passing this season passed the previous conference record of 3,317 set by Tommy Kramer of Rice in 1976. His 65 career touchdown passes also are a record.

Arkansas 38, Rice 17--Derek Russell had 15-yard touchdowns on an end around and a pass reception, and James Rouse’s 11-yard run late in the third quarter lifted the the 11th-ranked Razorbacks at Houston.

Arkansas turned the game into a rout in the final 10 minutes, capitalizing on two Rice turnovers for touchdowns. The Razorbacks also held the Owls to 98 rushing yards.

Arkansas (7-1 overall and 4-1 in the SWC), defeated the Owls (1-7-1, 1-5), for the ninth consecutive year.

Rice quarterback Donald Hollas completed 16 of 18 passes, including nine of his last 10, for 176 yards but left with 3:14 to go in the half with a sprained ankle after he was hit out of bounds. He did not return.

Texas A&M; 63, Southern Methodist 14--Darren Lewis rushed for 126 yards, scored two touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass, all in the first half, as the 20th-ranked Aggies won at College Station, Tex.

It was A&M;’s second largest victory margin over SMU in the 70-year history of the series. A&M; beat SMU, 63-0, in 1916.

The Aggies improved to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the SWC; SMU dropped to 2-6 and 0-6.
