WAITING FOR THE QUAKE : Caltrans’ List of 44 Troublespots

These are the bridges in the Los Angeles County area that have been designated by the California Department of Transportation as mostly like to sustain damage in an earthquake. They have been given top priority in a retrofitting program designed to strengthen the ability of their columns to withstand severe groundshaking. The risk rating the department has assigned to each bridge is based on a scale of 0.00 to 1.00, with 0.00 the least vulnerable and 1.00 the most vulnerable. The list represents only single column bridges. A program to retrofit multi-column bridges is expected to begin soon.
