Michael Chang, playing the type of inspired tennis that propelled him to this year’s French Open title and a place in the record books, trounced fellow American Dan Goldie 6-1, 6-1 today to reach the second round of the $440,000 Grand Prix tournament here.

But defending champion Jacob Hlasek of Switzerland was upset 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 by Martin Strelba, a 22-year-old Czechoslovakian ranked 77th in the world.

Chang, without a title since those heady summer days in Paris when the 17-year-old became the youngest male winner of a Grand Slam event, brought back memories of that triumph as he whipped Goldie, an often dangerous opponent who beat Chang in Philadelphia in February.

“Dan is the type who likes beating the top players,” Chang said. “I remember being up 6-2, 4-1 in Philadelphia and seeing him run off with the match.

“Today was the same surface (Supreme), and I was up 4-1 again in both sets. I started thinking about a lot of things. I wondered if he’d do it again.”

This time, however, Goldie was outclassed from start to finish as Chang used his speed, guile and a succession of brilliant passing shots to down his opponent, breaking Goldie twice in each set.

Every time Goldie rushed the net, he was punished by the 5-foot-8, 131-pound Chang. The beating he was taking got to Goldie, a former All-American and NCAA champion, and when he served to save match point, he double-faulted.

Chang, the No. 2 seed, said he was glad to get the match over and is excited about being closer to a possible championship showdown with John McEnroe.

McEnroe, the top seed, will play Scott Davis tonight.
