Reggie Jackson has been hired by KTLA as a color commentator for Angel games, Joe Quasarano, the station’s sports director, said Wednesday.

Bob Starr, who had been the team’s play-by-play announcer for the past 10 seasons, was replaced by former color commentator Joe Torre. Jackson, 43, will fill Torre’s position.

“Bob’s contract was up, and the station (officials) felt that Torre and Jackson would make a great team,” KTLA spokesman Ed Harrison said. “They worked together a couple of times at the end of last season.”

Jackson, who played five seasons with the Angels, worked as commentator on Angel games during August and September while Starr was doing radio play-by-play on Ram games for KMPC. Starr has broadcast Ram games for 10 seasons.

Besides working for KTLA last season, Jackson also has worked for ABC-TV as a color commentator during the playoffs and World Series. He also has been host of a syndicated show, “Sports Legends,” and is developing a youth-oriented show, “Play Ball,” for ESPN.

Jackson played 21 seasons with the Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees and Angels. He hit 563 home runs, sixth on the all-time list. Jackson, reached at his home in Oakland Wednesday night, said: “It’s a very nice situation. They want me to be there, so I feel wanted and I’ll go the extra mile for them and give 110%.

“I appreciate the opportunity. I still have a lot of friends with the Angels, and I have a good relationship with the Autrys (Gene and wife Jackie).”

Jackson said salary was not a problem. “It was a factor but not a problem,” he said. “It’s not network-type money, but I was treated fairly.”

Jackson said he is under contract to work all 57 telecasts, but there is also a stipulated five to seven days off as other commitments arise.
