An 87-year-old East San Diego woman was injured Thursday while protecting her home from fire, a San Diego Fire Department spokesman said.
Jesse Katroscik of the 3500 block of 43rd Street was taken to Navy Hospital in Balboa Park, suffering from smoke inhalation, spokesman Larry Stewart said. Katroscik was injured while using a garden hose to battle the fire, which erupted at a neighboring house, he said.
Firefighters arrived at the vacant single-story house at 1:09 p.m. and contained the blaze in 25 minutes, Stewart said. The wood-frame structure was destroyed, and damage to neighboring houses was estimated at several thousand dollars, he said.
