Dance fever: The White House celebrated Mr. Bojangles’ birthday Thursday--nearly six months late--when President Bush signed a joint congressional resolution designating May 25, 1989, as “National Tap Dance Day.” Legendary tap dancer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, was born May 25, 1878, and died in 1949. The White House wasn’t accepting blame for the delay, though. As a news release noted: “This joint resolution was received at the White House on Nov. 1, 1989.”

Globetrotters: Just back from Japan, Ronald and Nancy Reagan visit Washington Wednesday for the unveiling of their White House portraits and the dedication in Reagan’s name of a patio that Mrs. Reagan designed off the Oval Office.

Career switches: Veteran Detroit Police Cmdr. Gilbert Hill, who played Eddie Murphy’s tough-talking boss in the “Beverly Hills Cop” movies, has been elected to the Detroit City Council. Hill, 58, finished second in the 18-person field for nine council seats, and said he’d like to run for mayor some day. “If the people are as comfortable with me four years from now as they are now, I would certainly give it a try,” Hill said.
