Richard C. Bond, 80, who began his career as a $12-a-week stock boy with Philadelphia’s Strawbridge & Clothier and rose to head the nation’s oldest department store chain, John Wanamaker, from 1950 to 1968. He was also a well-known civic leader, serving as chairman of the committee that built Veterans Stadium of Philadelphia; ’76 Inc., which organized the city’s bicentennial celebration, and of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s China tour.
