Outfielder Robin Yount of the Milwaukee Brewers and four other players filed for free agency, raising the number of free agents to a record-tying 89.
Also filing were relief pitcher Rich (Goose) Gossage of the New York Yankees, first baseman Darrell Evans of the Atlanta Braves, pitcher Doug Bair of the Pittsburgh Pirates and pitcher Rick Horton of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Yount batted .318 with 21 home runs, 103 runs batted in and 101 runs scored. His average was fourth in the American League and he was seventh in RBIs. He made $1.15 million in 1989.
