Troy Taylor threw for 368 yards and two touchdowns as California, winless in the Pacific 10 until last weekend, defeated slumping Washington State, 38-26, Saturday at Berkeley for its second consecutive upset of a bowl-minded team.

The Bears’ all-time passing leader completed 25 of 33 passes to help Cal improve to 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the Pac-10.

Slowed earlier by nagging injuries and an unreliable line, Taylor has thrown for 740 yards in two games, including last week’s win over then-No. 15 Arizona.

Freshman backup tailback Greg Zomalt, filling in when starter Anthony Wallace left the game for good in the first quarter with an injury to his left ankle, ran for 105 yards and three touchdowns in 23 carries.

The defeat was the third in a row for the Cougars (6-4 and 3-4), who led 17-7 in the first quarter.

Arizona State 30, Stanford 22--Paul Justin’s third touchdown pass of the game--a 14-yarder to fullback Kelvin Fisher with 8:16 remaining--gave the Sun Devils a Pac-10 victory over the Cardinal at Tempe.

The victory put Arizona State, 6-3-1 overall, into sole possession of second place in the Pac-10 with a 3-2-1 record. The Sun Devils reportedly are a top candidate for the inaugural Copper Bowl on Dec. 31 in Tucson.

Stanford (2-8 and 2-5) lost for the sixth time in its last seven games despite a season-high 26 first downs and 470 yards total offense.

Washington 51, Oregon State 14--Greg Lewis rushed for three touchdowns during a 30-point second quarter as the Huskies (6-4 and 4-3) rolled to a Pac-10 victory at Corvallis, Ore. Oregon State is 4-5-1 and 3-3-1.
