U.S. Prosecutor in Chicago Securities Probes to Resign
U.S. Atty. Anton Valukas announced Monday that he will resign next month to return to private practice.
Valukas, 45, whom President Ronald Reagan appointed federal prosecutor for northern Illinois in 1985, supervised the government’s actions against 46 traders accused earlier this year of fraudulent practices at the Chicago Board of Trade and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
He also oversaw a probe of City Hall corruption in Chicago and the recent indictments of El Rukn gang members. He directed a follow-up of many cases that arose from Operation Greylord, an extensive probe of the Cook County court system.
Valukas said in a statement that he will resign Dec. 3 and return to the law firm of Jenner & Block, where he practiced before taking the federal post.
