Bruce Sutter, third on the major leagues’ saves list with 300, was released by the Atlanta Braves. The 36-year-old right-hander suffered a career-ending shoulder injury during spring training before last season but had remained on the Atlanta roster.
Sutter announced that his playing career was over last March after a complete rotator cuff tear was found in his right shoulder. He came back from a partial rotator-cuff tear suffered in 1986, which caused him to miss the 1987 season.
Three times Sutter recorded 35 or more saves in a season, including a National League-record 45 in 1984, when he won the Cy Young award while pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals.
