Second-seeded Kevin Curren pulled out of the South African Open tennis tournament today, hours before a second-round match, citing a knee injury.

His opponent for the match, South African Dean Botha, advanced to the quarterfinals and will play Jeremy Bates of Britain.

Bates and South Africa’s Gary Muller advanced with straight set victories. Bates defeated Neil Broad of South Africa, 6-1, 6-4, while Muller ousted Robert Van’t Hof of the United States, 6-4, 6-4. None of the four was among the eight seeds.

“I have waited for as long as I can, but I regret that I have to pull out,” said Curren, a South African native now an American. “I have already done a lot of damage by playing with the injury and it is under strict doctor’s orders that I am withdrawing.”

Curren said the injury will keep him out of the Masters in London later this month.

Top-seeded Jay Berger of the United States beat fellow American Marty Davis, 7-6, 7-5, on Wednesday night.
