P. M. BRIEFING : Software Firms Plan Piracy Suit
Six U.S. computer software companies will sue an alleged Hong Kong-based piracy ring nabbed by authorities with illegally copied programs and manuals worth $50 million, a computer executive said today.
Douglas Phillips, president of the Business Software Assn., which represents the companies, said they hope to recoup losses sustained by illegal program copying and set an example to stop such piracy.
Hong Kong authorities said Tuesday that they had smashed one of the largest Asian syndicates involved with supplying pirated software, seizing 109,437 counterfeited computer manuals and more than 6,500 pirated diskettes.
Phillips said U.S. software corporations Microsoft, WordPerfect, Lotus, Aldus, Autodesk and Ashton-Tate will sue the leaders of the syndicate.
