I doubt that illegitimacy is a legal term any more. Today any woman, married or unmarried, may legally bear a child. The correct terms are “single mother” and “child of a single mother.” Even “unwed mother” is from a bygone era. Today many women do not think of marriage as a prerequisite for motherhood.
