Wilson Stops Alemany in Second Half, 35-14

Alemany High won the last two games of its regular season by coming from behind, so maybe the Indians felt a bit out of place with an eight-point halftime lead in Friday night’s Division I playoff opener against Long Beach Wilson.

That might be the only way to explain why Alemany turned the ball over on five of its first six possessions in the second half. Wilson converted four of those miscues into touchdowns en route to a 35-14 win at Alemany.

Alemany’s errors ruined an otherwise productive night for Indian quarterback Joey Rosselli, the Valley’s fourth-ranked passer, who completed 20 of 37 passes for 235 yards. He threw two interceptions.

Wilson, meanwhile, was held to 200 yards in offense. But with all of Alemany’s turnovers deep in its own territory, the Bruins didn’t need to move the ball very far.

Alemany’s tragedy of errors began on the second play of the second half when Brian Brison fumbled and Wilson recovered at the Indian three.

Quarterback Sheldon Grigsby ran eight yards for a touchdown following a penalty and then passed for two points to tie the score, 14-14.

On the next snap, Alemany’s Terry Barnum fumbled, but Wilson subsequently missed a 38-yard field-goal attempt.

No problem, as the Indians gave the ball back on the next play when Rosselli fumbled. This time, the Bruins’ Ben Polk scored on a 24-yard run.

“I couldn’t tell you what happened. Everything went downhill,” Rosselli said. “Turnovers caused the whole thing.”

And so it went.

Polk ran for 88 yards in 19 carries and had two touchdowns. Teammate Mike Steward carried nine times for 78 yards and scored a touchdown.

Both of Alemany’s touchdowns came from Brison, who ran three yards for one and returned an interception 55 yards for the other.
