From Times staff and wire reports

Marilyn Quayle toured tornado-stricken Huntsville, where a twister left 17 dead and 463 injured. The wife of Vice President Dan Quayle restated a promise that federal assistance was on its way to the northern Alabama city. “The federal government will do everything it can to help this community, I assure you,” she said after viewing the area, which was struck by the tornado Wednesday and suffered an estimated $100 million in damage. Mrs. Quayle was accompanied by Alabama’s two Democratic senators and Republican Gov. Guy Hunt.
