Fire heavily damaged a two-story house Sunday night but the owner, who was home alone, escaped.

The fire broke out at 5:40 p.m. in the home on the 600 block of Hillcrest Drive. Owner Jacqueline Rush told fire officials that she had heard some popping sounds in the living room. She went to investigate and found the room in flames, Fire Capt. Dean Elliott said.

Rush ran into a rear bedroom and telephoned the Fire Department, then fled.

Elliott said one fire engine arrived at the house almost immediately, but three others were delayed three to four minutes by traffic on Coast Highway.

But the first engine company was able to gain control over the fire, which was contained in 15 minutes, he said.

Damage was estimated at $50,000 to the structure and $25,000 to the contents. Elliott said officials were still investigating the cause of the blaze late Sunday.
