Andrew Cassels scored his first NHL goal to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-2 victory over Calgary Monday night at Montreal, extending the Flames’ winless streak to six games.

Cassels, a 20-year-old called up to replace injured center Guy Carbonneau, scored off the rebound of fellow rookie Ed Christofoli’s shot 2:36 into the second period as the Canadiens beat the Flames for the second time this season. The teams met in the Stanley Cup finals last May.

“Just looking at the crowd and the bench and the fact that it turned out to be the game-winning goal made it even better,” Cassels said. “I thought I’d get a cheap assist for my first NHL point.”

Mike Keane and Bobby Smith also scored for Montreal, 14-9-2. Smith earned his 600th career assist on Keane’s goal.

The Flames, 10-8-6 overall but 0-4-2 in their last six games, had goals from Joel Otto and Doug Gilmour.

Winnipeg 3, New York Rangers 3--Thomas Steen and Pat Elynuik scored goals 88 seconds apart late in the third period as the Jets rallied at New York.

John Ogrodnick and Brian Mullen scored 91 seconds apart midway through the period to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead. But Steen came out of the corner and beat John Vanbiesbrouck with a short backhander at 12:41. Elynuik tied the game on a pass from Steen at 14:09.

The Jets, who entered the game with the worst road power play in the NHL, scored with the man advantage on Paul Fenton’s goal at 18:28 of the first period.

The Rangers responded with a power-play goal of their own, by Dave Archibald at 16:28 of the second period.
