SWEET FREEDOM: After a horrendous first year in 1984 (with losses exceeding $500,000), the Freedom Bowl is on the right track, as evidenced by its first-ever network contract for this year’s game (C1). . . . But Anaheim-area merchants have always liked the game, no matter who plays. Freedom Bowl officials say studies show that the game has generated more than $50 million in hotel, food and merchandising since its inception.
