‘Working Girl’ Still Working Its Magic

Surprisingly strong, “Working Girl” continues to lead the Billboard rental chart, but this may be its last week on top because a major Top Five overhaul is in the works. So far, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” is the only holiday blockbuster to make a big splash on the rental chart. But in the next week or two, look for “Rain Man,” “Major League” and “Pet Sematary” to be squeezed out of the Top Five by some of the heavy-hitting newcomers. “Say Anything,” the teen romantic comedy starring Ione Skye, is doing terrific rental business, much better than expected from a movie that grossed a decent but unspectacular $20 million in theaters. It shot up to No. 7 in just two weeks. “Batman” debuted on the sales chart--a gauge of what’s shipped to stores--at No. 9 but should roust “Roger Rabbit” out of the top spot in the next week or two.

* Bill Murray will be in heavy competition with himself this weekend. His “Scrooged”--a hip, comic version of “A Christmas Carol” that grossed over $58 million at the box office--entered the chart at No. 12 and should barge into the Top Five next week. Murray also stars in “Ghostbusters II,” which came out Wednesday and promises to be the top new rental of the Thanksgiving weekend.
