LATE HEROICS

Keith Burke’s interception with 4:50 to play--one play after Edison had turned the ball over at midfield--helped the Chargers advance to the Division I semifinals by holding off Eisenhower, 18-14.Trailing, 14-7, in its Division VIII game against Santa Ynez, Orange appeared to have lost a chance to pull even when running back Brian Remmel was stopped on four consecutive plays from the one-yard line. But Orange tackled Santa Ynez’s Matt Halme for a safety on the next play, then drove for the winning score on its next possession in a 15-14 quarterfinal victory.

The Agoura defense stopped Laguna Hills’ Darrin Chapman at the two-yard line on the final play to hold on to a 14-7 victory in the Division VIII quarterfinals. With the Hawks on the Agoura 25-yard line and no time on the clock, Chapman and quarterback Mark Wells teamed on a pass play that came up just short.

ODDS AND ENDS

Sunny Hills had two running backs gain more than 100 yards in 21-0 victory over Tustin in the Division VI quarterfinals. Brian Pizula had 126 yards in 21 carries and Kenny Overby had 124 yards in 19 carries. The Lancers had 307 yards rushing.

Getting Offensive: Top-seeded Capistrano Valley scored four touchdowns on plays of 43 yards or longer in its 44-12 Division III victory over Santa Ana. Paul Shaheen scored on a 65-yard run, Dan Zamora and Dave Poltl scored on pass plays and 48 and 55 yards, respectively, and Bernie Chapman scored on a 43-yard return of a blocked punt.

At the Movies: Eric Patton, Capistrano Valley coach, said he detected a flaw in Santa Ana’s punting game while reviewing game films earlier in the week and called for an all-out block on Santa Ana’s first punt attempt. Sure enough, Capistrano Valley nose guard Damon Psaros blocked Gus Plasencia’s first punt and teammate Bernie Chapman recovered and ran 43 yards for a touchdown.

“I thought we could block every one of their punts coming into the game,” said Ray Panici, Capistrano Valley’s offensive coordinator.

ON THE RECORD

‘Our defensive coordinator said we would need 28 points to win this game. But he says that every week. I guess we fell seven points short.’

--Tim Devaney, Sunny Hills coach, after his team’s 21-0 victory over Tustin in the Division VI playoffs.

‘I don’t remember Tim as a player, I just know he went to Servite. That automatically makes him the enemy.’

--Marion Ancich, Tustin coach, about his counterpart at Sunny Hills, Tim Devaney. Ancich, whose Tillers fell to Sunny Hills, 21-0, in the Division VI playoffs, coached at St. Paul, a rival of Servite’s in the Angelus League.

‘This is a good football team. We’ve had some setbacks, but we’re as healthy as we can be, and are playing as good as we should be.’

--Dave Holland, Corona del Mar coach, whose Sea Kings advanced to the Division VI semifinals with a 10-0 victory over Brea-Olinda. Corona del Mar is the defending Division VI champion, but had to qualify for the playoffs as an at-large team.
