UC Irvine, After Losing Opener, Looks to Rebound Tonight Against Stanford
The UC Irvine mens’ basketball team will take a second shot at a first win when it plays Stanford tonight at 7:30 in Irvine’s Bren Center.
The Anteaters lost their season-opener, 79-71, to the University of San Francisco, Saturday.
Irvine played sloppy throughout, committing 21 turnovers, shooting 47% and making just nine of 17 free-throw attempts (52%).
Still, the Anteaters led 59-48 midway through the second half. But USF used a full-court press and a half-court trap to cause numerous turnovers and eventually come away with the victory.
In Stanford, Irvine faces a young team with only one senior. The Cardinal won their opener, 88-56, over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Friday.
Stanford was led by 6-foot-10 center Adam Keefe who scored 21 points and had nine rebounds. The game will be a homecoming for Keefe, a sophomore, who played his high school basketball at Irvine’s Woodbridge High.
Matching up against Keefe will be Irvine’s Ricky Butler who scored 21 points against USF, making 10-of-13 shots
