Desormeaux Fails in 5 Tries, Remains 2 Short of Record
Just two winners shy of the finish line in an 11-month race for a record, jockey Kent Desormeaux went nowhere Tuesday.
Desormeaux rode five mounts at Laurel Race Course, and five times he failed to win. That kept him one winner shy of Chris McCarron’s 15-year-old record of 546 victories in a year for the second racing day.
“It’s getting to be a little frustrating,” Desormeaux said after his final ride. “We’re ready for it to all happen now. We’ve got 5 1/2, six weeks from here. We’re still confident. All we can do is be patient from here. It’s going to happen.”
Laurel will be dark today and Desormeaux, who has promised to stay in Maryland to break the record, has been named on horses in six of the track’s 10 scheduled races Thursday.
