Students at four Redondo Beach elementary schools have been awarded prizes in the inaugural Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10-K mural contest sponsored by the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce. The chamber will hold its 12th annual Super Bowl Sunday 10-K Run and 5-K Walk on Jan. 28, the morning of the Super Bowl. “Best in Color” award went to Sallie Tahajian’s sixth-grade language and literature class at Adams School for its depiction of the race-day field under a rainbow. “Most Original” award went to the third-grade class of Diana Barton at Alta Vista School. The 28 students painted an ocean filled with fish, each with its own race number, swimming toward the finish line in King Harbor. Boys and girls from every classroom participated in Jefferson School’s mural, which was cited for “Theme and Form.” Teachers Barbara Barr, Gail Yoneoka and Barbara Bedford coordinated the project, which involved all of the school’s 285 students. The result was a depiction of the Coordinated School Health Program’s theme, “It’s Funner to Be a Runner.” An honorable mention went to Lincoln School for the entry submitted by the 32 pupils in Sharon Heitzenreder’s fourth-grade class, depicting a beach scene with a stadium.

Barbara Glennie has been named vice president and general manager of Torrance Chamber of Commerce, according to an announcement by Kevin Peterson, president of the chamber’s board of directors. Glennie has worked with the chamber for more than three years and was previously director of communications for Capital Area United Way in Lansing, Mich. Before that, she was a newspaper editor for eight years in New Jersey. Glennie and her husband, Daniel, an attorney with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., have four college-age children.

Robert M. Popeney, attorney with the Torrance law firm of Popeney, Lebetsamer & Grange, is the new president of the South Bay Bar Assn. A director of the association since 1982, Popeney has served as judge pro tem for the Los Angeles and South Bay municipal courts. His primary expertise is in business litigation and family law. Popeney and his wife, Gail, live in Rancho Palos Verdes with their children, Douglas, 12, and Tracy, 10.

Jane Crawford, associate professor and chairwoman of the Loyola Marymount University classics department, has been awarded the 1989 Distinguished Teaching Award by the American Philological Assn. Crawford, who is on sabbatical in Padua, Italy, will receive her award at the annual meeting of the APA in Boston in December. She has been a full-time faculty member at Loyola since 1984 and holds a doctorate in classics and master’s degrees in Greek and Latin. In 1988 she was a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.

Joel Jones, a 1978 graduate of Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, has been appointed a deputy public defender for Los Angeles County. Before accepting the position, he worked as an attorney for a private law firm in Orange County for two years. To accept the job, Jones resigned his chairmanship of the Orange County Bar Assn.’s criminal law section. Jones attended UC Santa Barbara and graduated from Southwestern University School of Law in 1986.

David Diestel, vice president and general manager of Prudential-Bache Securities, has been appointed treasurer of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, succeeding Joanne Harrison, vice president and branch manager of Great Western Bank, who has been promoted and transferred to Great Western’s Belmont Shores branch.

Rolling Hills resident Dr. Richard A. Oas was named a fellow of the American College of Radiology at the college’s annual meeting in Seattle. Selected for outstanding contributions to the field of radiology, Oas was named one of 107 new fellows by the college’s board of chancellors.

Frank Hallstein is the new president of the Hermosa Beach Kiwanis. Other officers seated at recent installation festivities are John Woodall, past president; Dr. Merle Fish, president-elect; Kevin Northcraft, vice president; Dr. Charles Imai, secretary, and Mike Frandzel, treasurer.

Jason Anderson of Redondo Beach and Tina Janette Gentile of Torrance are among 13 Claremont McKenna College students working in Washington this fall as part of the college’s Washington Internship Program. The semester-long program offers students the opportunity to study politics while gaining first-hand political experience. Interns work full time in Washington offices and attend classes and special lectures.

Frank Richelieu, pastor of Redondo Beach Church of Religious Science, has announced the recent appointment of four ministers-in-training to the church staff. They are Ruthellen Barnett of Redondo Beach, Shirley Ludwick of Palos Verdes Estates, Elle Bratland of Playa del Rey and Joseph Ritacco of Torrance. The new ministers were trained for five years under the tutorage of Richelieu and his wife, associate minister Anita Richelieu. Jan Joseph Losi has been appointed curator of the Banning Residence Museum. The home, built in 1864 by Gen. Phineas Banning, is a Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department facility and a state and national landmark. Losi, who holds degrees from State University of New York at Buffalo and the University of Delaware, was previously affiliated with the McNamara House Museum in Victoria, Tex., and the Niagara County Historical Society, Lockport, N.Y. The museum, at 401 E. M St., Wilmington, is open for tours on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.

The San Pedro Peninsula Hospital Foundation has named San Pedro resident John DiCarlo as president of its board of trustees. Lee Anderson, owner of Anderson Enterprises and wife of Rep. Glenn Anderson (D-San Pedro), is the new vice president, and Brian Y. Harrison, president of Metropolitan Stevedore Co., has been named secretary. DiCarlo is a partner in Windes & McClaughry Accountancy. A certified public accountant, DiCarlo earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Loyola Marymount University and a master’s degree in taxation from Golden Gate University in San Francisco.
