No. 16 Texas A&M; Rallies Past Texas for 21-10 Win
Lance Pavlas threw to Percy Waddle for a 45-yard touchdown pass play on the final play of the third quarter Saturday, sparking 16th-ranked Texas A&M; to a 21-10 Southwest Conference victory over Texas.
The Longhorns appeared to relax, apparently thinking the Aggies weren’t going to get a play off before the quarter ended. Cornerback Grady Cavness went for a pump fake by Pavlas and there wasn’t a defender within 20 yards of Waddle.
Texas A&M;, which will meet Pittsburgh in the John Hancock Bowl on Dec. 30 in El Paso, finished the regular season 8-3 overall and second in the SWC at 6-2. The Longhorns were 5-6 and 4-4. It was Texas’ first back-to-back losing seasons since 1937-38.
The start of the game was delayed five minutes by a midfield brawl between the two squads. Order was restored without injury to either side and nobody was banished to the dressing room.
It was A&M;’s sixth consecutive victory over Texas, but the Longhorns lead the series 63-28-5.
Winfred Tubbs rushed 29 times for 147 yards, including a nonscoring 74-yard run in the first quarter.
Texas A&M;’s Keith McAfee scored on a one-yard run to tie the score, 7-7. McAfee started at tailback because A&M;’s leading rusher, Darren Lewis, didn’t suit up because of a knee injury.
