GOLF ROUNDUP : It Takes 4 Playoff Holes, but Glasson-Bradley Wins

Bill Glasson and Pat Bradley scored an eagle at the fourth playoff hole Sunday to beat Duffy Waldorf and Patty Sheehan and win the $1 million J.C. Penney tournament at Largo, Fla.

Glasson and Bradley, playing as a team for the first time, shot the day’s best round (66), with birdies on five of the first seven holes in the event matching players from the PGA and LPGA tours.

Waldorf-Sheehan (35-32--67) caught Glasson-Bradley with a birdie at the par-five 18th hole when Waldorf blasted out of a bunker, Sheehan chipped two feet from the hole and Waldorf sank the putt.

In the playoff, each team birdied the 16th, 17th and 18th holes under the alternate-shot format.

At the fourth playoff hole--the par-five 16th--Glasson put a three-iron shot of 233 yards 12 feet from the pin. Waldorf hit a one-iron 235 yards out of a fairway divot to the edge of the green.

Sheehan putted past the hole before Bradley sank a 12-footer for the eagle.

The winners shared a $200,000 first prize while Waldorf-Sheehan each got $60,000 for their efforts. The teams wound up regulation tied at 21-under 267.

Jay Don Blake and rookie Tracy Kerdyke, tied for the lead with Gene Sauers and Beth Daniel at 17 under after three rounds, shot an even-par 35-37--72. Blake-Kerdyke finished tied for third with Kenny Perry and Sherri Turner at 271, falling out of contention with a bogey at the 13th hole and a double-bogey on 15.

Peter Senior, who won the Australian PGA last month, shot a 2-under-par 70 to win the Australian Open by seven strokes. He finished with a total of 271.

Peter Fowler, the 1983 Australian Open champion, finished second after a final round 69 and a total of 278.

Defending champion Mark Calcavecchia had a 75 to slip from second to fourth and finish at 280. One stroke ahead of him was Australian Brett Ogle, who finished with a 69 over the 6,847-yard course in suburban Melbourne.

Senior, who had only two bogeys in 72 holes, went into the final round with a four-shot lead over Calcavecchia.

Terri Melanson of West Hollywood defeated Mary Budke of South Pasadena, 2-and-1, to win the 23rd annual California Women’s Championship at Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley.
