HOLLYWOOD PARK : Stylish King, Tarascon Top Field at Hollywood

Share

Stylish King and Tarascon, a pair of promising 2-year-olds with Hollywood Futurity and Kentucky Derby ambitions, head a field of six in Wednesday’s featured $75,000 Hollywood Prevue Stakes at seven furlongs.

Jack Kent Cooke’s Stylish King was so impressive when breaking his maiden at Santa Anita last month that one Kentucky Derby future book promptly established the son of Roberto as co-second favorite behind Grand Canyon for next May’s Run for the Roses. Stylish King crushed a solid maiden field by 4 1/2 lengths while running six furlongs in 1:09 2/5.

Tarascon, after breaking his maiden in 1:08 4/5 at Santa Anita, last month convincingly handled an allowance field at Hollywood Park in 1:16 1/5 for 6 1/2 furlongs. The bay gelding trained by David Hofmans is a son of Flying Paster.

The winner of Wednesday’s test probably will be regarded as the main contender to Grand Canyon in the $1-million Hollywood Futurity to be run here Dec. 17.

Here is how the six entrants will line up from the rail out: Ridder Thoroughbred Stable’s Tarascon, 115, Ralph Sibille; Top Cash, 122, Lafitt Pincay Jr.; Golden Eagle Farm’s Individualist I, 115, Robbie Davis; Suzanne and B Cairo’s Kept His Cool, 112, Rafael Meza; Stylish King, 112, Eddie Delahoussaye, and Chambers, Bloom and Dedomnico’s Smart Too, 117, Chris McCarron.

Top Cash prevailed in the seven-furlong Desert Wine Sales Stakes at Santa Anita Nov. 1 to merit the top weight by winning a sweepstakes and earning more than $50,000. His next assignment was the 1 1/16-mile Leeland Stanford Stakes at Bay Meadows. The race was run over a sloppy track; and the son of Stalwart appeared not to care for it and finished fourth.

Second high-weight is the Washington-bred Smart Too, winner of the 6 1/2-furlong Tukwila Stakes at Longacres Aug. 19. In two stakes since at 1 1/16 mile, the son of Smarten finished fifth. The bay colt will be making his first start under the direction of Hall-of-Fame trainer Charles Whittingham in the Prevue.
