The Hartford Whalers are having trouble winning at home, but they don’t have that problem at Boston.

Mikael Andersson scored a goal and set up another Thursday night to lead the visiting Whalers to a 4-3 victory over the Bruins.

The Whalers, beaten at home Wednesday night by the New York Islanders, have won two games at Boston.

Against the rest of the league, the Bruins are almost unbeatable in the small Boston Garden rink. They are 13-1-3.

The Whalers, only 5-10-1 at home, are fourth in the Adams Division, so far the toughest in the NHL.

The league’s three best records belong to Boston, Montreal and Buffalo, all members of the Adams Division. The Whalers are 14-15-1 and their 29 points put them in fourth place.

The Bruins scored first on a goal by Garry Galley but didn’t score again until after the Whalers had built a 4-1 lead in the third period.

“I have no idea why we play well in Boston,” said Coach Rick Ley. “All I know is that we didn’t look anything like the team that played so poorly last night. We hustled and played hard throughout the game.”

Philadelphia 4, Buffalo 3--The Flyers appeared to have their fifth consecutive home victory over the Sabres wrapped up when they took a 3-1 lead six minutes into the third period.

Instead, they had to win it on Ron Sutter’s backhander at 1:24 of overtime. Since their last overtime victory, the Flyers had gone 0-6-11.

“The play worked the way we planned it,” Sutter said. “Rich (Tocchet) took a couple guys out and that got me free. I made a move and it worked.”

The tying goal, by Mike Foligno on a power play, came with 11 seconds remaining in regulation. It was only the third shot for the Sabres in the last 12 minutes.

Rookie Jiri Latal, who played in the Czechoslovakian Elite League last season, scored his first NHL goal. He broke a scoreless tie four minutes into the second period.

Toronto 5, St. Louis 2--Mark Osborne had his second two-goal game in as many nights to lead the Maple Leafs at St. Louis.

Although Brett Hull scored his 21st and 22nd goals for the Blues, they fell to 5-6-2 on home ice. On the road, they have the second-best record in the NHL, 7-5-3.
