The United States confirmed that Iraq launched a rocket powerful enough to put a small payload into space, raising fears that the Arab nation has the missile capability to hit Israel or targets farther away. Officials had been skeptical that Iraq, which recently concluded an exhausting eight-year war with Iran, could achieve such a feat. Analysts said that scientists and engineers from Egypt and Argentina helped Iraq to develop the rocket.
