SAN DIEGO SPORTS ET CETERA : SDSU Women Lose Fifth Game in a Row

The Cal women’s basketball team handed San Diego State its fifth consecutive loss, 80-68, Friday night at Berkeley.

Julie Evans had 20 points for SDSU, and teammates Lori Lollis and DeeDee Davis added 18 apiece. Crystal Lee had 11 assists for the Aztecs.

The Bears took an 11-0 lead in the opening minutes and extended their advantage to 13 points before halftime. The Aztecs tied it at 26, 38, 40 and 42 before Cal (4-1) pulled away.

Candida Echeverria was seven of 10 from the field and seven of seven from the free-throw line for a game-high 23 points to lead the University of San Diego over Arizona, 85-62, in a nonconference game at USD. Lynda Jones added 19 points, Paula Mascari 17 and Chris Enger had a game-high 10 rebounds and two blocks for the Toreras (4-1). Melissa Handley had 23 points for Arizona (4-1).

Freshman Carrie Carambas, a Mira Mesa High graduate, came off the bench and scored 20 points to lead visiting Point Loma Nazarene to a 90-53 nonconference victory over Whittier (0-8). All 11 players scored for the Crusaders (3-1), who led at halftime, 55-26. PLNC outrebounded Whittier, 45-26. PLNC’s leading scorer, Camille Armijo, had 16 points.
