“An Evening With Alan Jay Lerner,” which aired Nov. 24 on PBS, should have been subtitled “Integration in the Arts Is Dead.” There was not one black star in the entire 90-minute program. The only black face at all, in fact, was one of the ensemble singer/dancers in the “Ascot Gavotte” number from “My Fair Lady.” Was this the fault of selective editing at PBS or was the original tribute at Lincoln Center (obviously much longer than 90 minutes) equally “white-washed”? And on the musical level, what happened to two of Lerner’s greatest works, the title song from “Gigi” and “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face” from “My Fair Lady”?
