Jorge Paez, angered by a sixth-round point deduction for holding, unleashed a flurry of unanswered punches to stop challenger Lupe Gutierrez and retain his International Boxing Federation featherweight title Saturday at Reno.
The two boxers were nearly even on all three judges’ scorecards going into the sixth round, but referee Mills Lane took away a point after Paez, 24, held Gutierrez’s head during an exchange of blows.
Paez, 33-2 with 25 knockouts, responded by battering Gutierrez until Lane stopped the fight with 2:01 gone in the round.
