Doug Scovil, the former San Diego State coach who as a Philadelphia Eagles’ assistant was given much of the credit for the development of quarterback Randall Cunningham, died Saturday of a heart attack at Veterans Stadium. He was 62.

Scovil apparently had just finished his daily workout with a stationary bike ride and had taken a few steps when he fell to the floor in the team’s training room, the Eagles said.

“I’ve known Doug Scovil since 1967, when I worked for him (at Pacific),” Eagle Coach Buddy Ryan said. “He’s a great coach who meant a great deal to the Eagles. He did a great job with Randall.

“Doug will be sorely missed. We’ll dedicate the rest of the season to him and hopefully it will go to the (Super Bowl). “

Scovil served as head coach from 1981 to 1985 at San Diego State, where he compiled an overall record of 24-32-3.

He was an assistant at Navy from 1963 to 1965 before becoming head coach at Pacific, where Ryan served as defensive coordinator in 1967. He worked for the San Francisco 49ers from 1970 to 1975.

He had been with the Eagles for four seasons.
