COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Moorpark, Crawford Turn Back Kings River

Sam Crawford scored 27 points and handed out 10 assists to lead Moorpark College to a 70-64 win over Kings River in the championship game of the Mid-State tournament at Cuesta College Saturday night.

Crawford, named the most valuable player of the tournament, scored five three-point baskets in helping the Raiders come back from a 34-30 halftime deficit.

Teammate Roger Thomas scored 18 points and was named to the all-tournament team.

The win boosted Moorpark’s record to 9-3. Kings River fell to 8-3.

In another tournament game:

Canyons 98, Cuesta 90--Freshman Nick Sanderson scored 16 points off the bench--all in the second half--including four in the final minute to lead the Cougars (5-5) to a third-place finish.

Canyons led, 92-88, with a minute to play when Sanderson, a graduate of Bell-Jeff High, made a jump shot and a pair of free throws. Forward Larry Allbritton made a layup with 15 seconds to play to seal the win.

Allbritton scored a game-high 26 points and was four of four from the three-point line. Guard Steve Valenzuela, who scored 16 points, made three of six three-point shots.

NONCONFERENCE

Eastern Montana 85, Cal Lutheran 62--Jeff deLaveaga scored a game-high 23 points, including 21 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough for Cal Lutheran (0-7). Eastern Montana (6-1) jumped to a 22-9 lead midway through the first half.

Cal Lutheran center Mike Demeter scored 15 points and had 12 rebounds. DeLaveaga made 15 of 16 free throws.

WOMEN

Cal Lutheran 67, Occidental 65--Trailing 67-62, Occidental’s Sharon Bruner hit a three-point shot with less than a minute left, but visiting Cal Lutheran (5-2) held on. Brenda Lee scored 17 points and had 16 rebounds and Dani Elton tossed in 15 for the Regals. Bruner scored 23 points and Kelly Stephenson added 14 points and 11 rebounds for Occidental (2-3).

Pomona-Pitzer 77, The Master’s 53--Anne Backus scored a game-high 27 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had seven assists to lead host Pomona-Pitzer (6-2).

Susie Sparks and Christy Barfoot each had 12 points to lead Master’s (2-8).
