“Budget Motels” by Loris G. Bree lists more than 3,500 motels throughout the United States and Canada where two can stay overnight for less than $40 or as low as $19.95 for a single. Information for each of these no-frills lodgings is categorized alphabetically by state and city.

The book also provides basic data such as prices, senior discounts, phone numbers, facilities and directions from the nearest freeway, and points out those motels that offer amenities such as free coffee, continental breakfast, TV and in-room phones (MarLor Press: $8.95).

The “Double Eagle Guides” include local, state and national public campgrounds for the Pacific Northwest, Rocky Mountains, Far West, Southwest, northern Great Plains and southern Great Plains. They can help you save time and money, showing you where to camp and how to get there, and they include the nearest highway accesses. Descriptions of facilities, fees, features, activities and attractions are also included and cross-referenced on key-coded fold-out maps (Discovery Publishing/Preston Guides: $4.95 each).

More than 300 events are listed in “California Festivals” by Carl and Katie Landau with Kathy Kincade. It’s a super guide to a variety of theme festivals, including those at which you can feast on garlic chocolate, try a squid pizza or visit a ghost town. Other events include a Mozart festival and a race of stern-wheelers on Lake Tahoe.

The listings are keyed by month, date, region and city for easy reference. This second edition includes more than 50 new festivals (Publishers Group West/Landau Communications: $9.95).
