An automated battlefield with wars fought by robots and computers instead of humans? That’s what viewers of the PBS science series “Nova” will see next season in “Smart Weapons,” an episode that is being produced by KCET in Los Angeles. The episode will examine advances in military hardware that will affect the world’s balance of power.
The annual World Cup of Figure Skating held in Ottawa, Canada and featuring 20 Olympic and world figure skaters competing for $250,000 in prize money, will be broadcast by ESPN on Dec. 19.

“A Garfield Christmas Special,” a half-hour 1987 cartoon special about the self-centered, materialistic cat, will be rerun by CBS on Dec. 21 at 8 p.m.
George C. Scott won kudos in 1984 for turning his Christmas sneer into holiday cheer as Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol.” CBS will rebroadcast the two-hour movie on Christmas Eve at 9 p.m.
