From Associated Press

Bob Essensa is making a career out of beating the Calgary Flames.

The Winnipeg Jets’ goaltender stopped 27 shots Sunday at Winnipeg as the Jets beat the defending Stanley Cup champions, 4-1.

The win lifted Essensa’s career record against Calgary to 5-1-0 and marked Winnipeg’s third victory against one loss to the Flames this season.

Two power-play goals early in the second period, one from Pat Elynuik and another by Dale Hawerchuk, were the difference this time. Elynuik’s team-leading 15th goal and Hawerchuk’s second goal in as many games gave the Jets a 3-1 lead.

Chicago 7, Vancouver 1--Seldom-used Al Secord scored two goals, Jacques Cloutier extended his home winning streak to eight and the Canucks lost their eighth straight road game.

Appearing in only his 11th game this season, Secord got his first two goals, passing the 200-career goal mark as a Blackhawk with 201.

Buffalo 4, Washington 3--The Sabres continued to play well at home, as they equaled a club record set in 1972-73 with their 12th straight victory at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium.

Rick Vaive had a goal and an assist and Dave Andreychuk, Scott Arniel and Alexander Mogilny also scored goals. The Sabres, 13-0-1 at home, are the only team in the NHL without a loss on home ice.

Philadelphia 4, New York Rangers 2--The Flyers killed off all eight Ranger power plays, including four in the first period, at Madison Square Garden.
