City Approves Funds for Rain-Making Program

Share

Eager for relief from dry winters, the San Diego City Council has approved a $150,000 contribution to a pilot cloud-seeding program with the Helix and Sweetwater water districts.

The agencies will hire Atmospherics Inc., a private firm that seeds clouds with a chemical compound to create rain, in a continuation of last winter’s program.

The seeding, which must be done during winter, showed promise last year but could not be fully evaluated because of the paucity of winter storms, according to a city report.

The city will pay 75% of the cost of this year’s program as part of an agreement that could continue the effort until 1994.
