From Times staff and wire service reports

A string of five arson fires were set throughout the San Fernando Valley early this morning. Authorities are investigating the blazes but report no arrests.

No injuries were reported and no evidence has been uncovered to link the fires, said Pat Marek, spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The first fire caused about $45,000 in damage at a two-story office building in the 12000 block of Ventura Boulevard in Studio City early this morning. Several small fires had been set on the first and second floors, “apparently to cover up a burglary,” Marek said.

An arson fire at St. Genevieve’s High School in Panorama City was reported about 1:20 a.m., Marek said. The fire in an office at the school on Roscoe Boulevard was put out in about 15 minutes and caused more than $13,000 damage.

A brush fire that blackened 10 acres in Woodland Hills and two small brush fires in the Topanga Canyon area were also attributed to arson.
